For Kennie

Kennie said she is going to try her hand at making homemade buns this weekend. I thought I would offer up a really easy recipe!

Kara's Easy Peasy Two Hour Buns:

In bowl mix:
3 cups really warm, but not scalding water
1/2 c sugar
2 tbsp yeast
Give a light stir.

Let sit for 5-10 minutes. The pour into bigger bowl. Add the following:
1/3 c oil
1.5 tsp salt
2 eggs
Whisk this together.
You will need to add 7-8 cups of flour. Do it one cup at a time. Use the whisk to mix it until whisk looks like it is going to break. Then take over with hands. Mix it in the bowl, then knead it on a lightly floured surface until it is soft like a babies bum.

Clean your big bowl and lightly oil it. Put baby-bum dough into bowl and cover with plastic- northern bag works well. Let rise 15 minutes. Punch down (5 punches should do- don't take out all aggression on dough). Let rise another 15 minutes and punch down. Let rise another 15 minutes (yes, do this 3 times!) and punch down.
Now take pieces out that are about the size of your fist, maybe a bit smaller. You will want to grease your counter- a quick spray of pam does the trick. Roll these into nice bun shapped objects. Cup hand, put dough under cupped hand, move hand in clockwise motion with pinky side of hand touching counter the whole time and the rest of the hand applying pressure. Put onto greased cookie sheet. Cover with plastic and let rise for 45 minutes. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes. Makes 20'ish buns. Always save some dough and fry it in the frying pan. mmmmmmmmm

ooooooooh! that doesn't look too complicated. Now all I have to do is remember to pick up some eggs at the Northern tomorrow before I head home. I'll let you and everyone else know how this "experiment in cooking" goes :-)

Fried bread dough = toutons!! The best newfie dish in existance. Cut it in half after it's fried and put butter, and then add molasses over the top. Yum yum yum.
