Seal Mittens

This mitten making wonder woman is at it again!! So far this month I have made nine pairs of mittens and they are looking amazing. This last pair was made from a gorgeous coat that I almost hated to cut up! It is Alaskan fur seal that has been sheared and dyed black. It is so soft and warm! Even as I was sewing them together my hands were getting hot and that was before I put a nice fleecy liner in them. The lucky owner of these mittens lives right here in Faro and seems very happy with her purchase.

Sadly, I am out of hide until I get to town next week to purchase more. This weekend I hope to start on a pair of wrap mukluks for another Faroite. He has given me an old one to take apart and use for a pattern. I sure hope I can make it!

And now I need a new contractor....

Yep. Today just isn't my day.

Nose still hurts and the boy managed to hit it again with his hand. Ouch.

And then the second contractor that we have lined up to put in our windows has said he cannot do it due to poor health. Okay, someone out there MUST know a reliable contractor that can install 10 windows for us!!! The windows are paid for and we will be bringing them home in two weeks. Please, if you know of someone who can do it for us in the next 10 months or so, please oh please let us know. We can room and board them, whatever is needed.

What a day.

Not my day!

It is only twenty after nine this morning and I already know that this is not going to be a pleasant day.

The boy woke up at 5am for the 5th day in a row. He loves 5am. I love 6am. Why oh why can't he sleep another hour?? And there isn't time for a morning nap today because it is playgroup today. He is going to be some pissy.

Then right before Matt was heading out to work, the boy gave me a wicked head-butt to the nose. My nose crunched. Seriously. It crunched so loud Matt heard it. I yelped and ran to the bathroom with a bloody nose and tears in my eyes. It is now an hour and a half later and it is still so tender. I put ice on it, and so far it isn't swollen and no bruising.

*** run to catch boy....

As I was typing I looked over and there is my boy shaking his bottle of milk in the living room. Milk was all over. As I ran over he began shaking even more vigorously.

Anyone want a kid today? I will sell him cheap! Heck, I might even pay you to take him today!

My little apple eater!

The boy loves to eat apples. However, he is quite particular on how he eats them. He will not eat slices or pieces. It has to be the whole thing at once!! Throughout the day he will eat at least half of this apple. I spent the day playing find the apple!

Eating bubbles!

I guess bubbles left over from a sink full of dirty dishes is absolutely delicious! Or at least my kid thinks so.

Congratulations Ontario!!

As of today, kids in Ontario will no longer be submitted to their parents stupidity while riding in vehicles!! It is now illegal to smoke while kids are in the vehicle. This follows Nova Scotia and some places in the States.

Come on the rest of Canada! Get going on this asap!! Perhaps the Yukon, being the last place in Canada to ban smoking, can get on this quickly for a change.

***update!! I just went online to see about the rules regarding smoking in public places and guess what!! The Yukon did pass the same legislation and Ontario and Nova Scotia regarding smoking in vehicles with kids. Thanks Yukon!!!!

Tag from Kennie

Kennie from Arctic Bay tagged me on this one. I had to go into my sixth photo folder and get the sixth picture in there to blog about.

And of course it is Hunter!! This is right after we returned to Kugluktuk with him. I think he is about 10 days old here. I am pretty sure that is a yawn and not a cry since I look fairy happy in the picture. I cannot believe I am going to be going through all of this again in three short months or less. And when did my boy get so big???

I think most everyone I know has been tagged on this one. So you are all free and clear :)

3 months.

That is it! Only three more months until Skeletor makes his/her appearance.

I find that this pregnancy is moving along much quicker than the last. Probably because my days are filled with a busy toddler!

I have had quite a few people ask how I am feeling and I am super excited to say that I have been yak-free for almost a month! What a treat. Throwing up a few times a day gets really exhausting. I am almost back up to my pre-pregnancy weight, so I may end up actually gaining a bit of weight this pregnancy.

My tummy feels huge and I have started getting the Braxton-Hicks contractions. Joy. My whole tummy gets rock hard and it is just plain uncomfortable. Skeletor is still practicing to be an Olympic gymnast and good god can this kid kick!

Of course Matt is still positive I am harbouring a girl... And in 91 days or less we will find out for sure!

My Kitchen Helper

Hunter was a spectacular kitchen helper today.

First he pulled a chair up to the counter. Then he emptied the gadget (flippers, wooden spoons, etc) container.

Next he eyes up the microwave....

While I take advantage of him being entertained so I can bake, he proceeds to fill up the microwave. Contents of microwave? Gadget container, set of keys, cap from the side of the toilet, and a block of margarine... Not sure which recipe book he was following!

Third times a charm!

I made my third pair of mittens over the weekend and I love how these ones turned out. I think I have these ones sold and I have an order in already for another pair. Since I am using recycled fur coats I can sell them relatively cheap. If I was ordering in beaver pelts I would nearly have to triple my price. Hurray for the many uses of fur!!

To the dump!

I love going to the dump. I seriously do. It was always the highlight of the weekend when we were little and we headed out there with dad. Yep, you can tell you live in the boonies when a trip to the dump has been the highlight of your weekends since you were a kid.

For the last couple of months there have been a pair of coyotes making their home at the dump. I think the electric fencing must be off for the winter since their tracks go right through the fencing. Today I finally remembered my camera and got some great shots.

-38C, but my toes were nice and warm!

The furnaces in Faro working overtime to keep everyone warm:

I love it when it is cold out. The sun is almost always shining and everything looks clean and crisp.

The dump coyote! It is here everytime we head out. This one was walking right up to the truck. Perfect for picture taking!

He was wishing we had brought the kitties for a lunch date!

The other dump coyote snacking on something delicious in the brush.

Five and a half years...

That is how long we having been living north of 60! Each year just keeps getting better. My poor Cape Breton husband has adjusted to the darkness, dryness and cold. It wasn't too much of an adjustment for me. Growing up in northern BC has been nearly the same experience as living in the NWT and the Yukon. I don't think anything prepared us for our time in Nunavut though. It was quite the experience.

Before we know it we will be hitting ten years... twenty years... who knows. All I know is that we are happy and content in the north, especially here in the Yukon.

Why I love my new washing machine and facebook

Yesterday evening Matt had the neighbour over to help lug the brand new washer and dryer upstairs and the old ones downstairs. Poor neighbour, I think we owe him a few beers for that. They are gorgeous! Kenmore, stacking front loads. Thank you mom and dad!

This morning after Matt went to work, I giddily ran over to them with the first load of laundry. This is pretty odd in itself. I hate to do the laundry and Matt usually takes over this chore. All was going good. Hunter loved the washing machine and watched it for a good 10 minutes. He even danced in front of it. Soon after I put the boy down for his nap and I came into the dining room to go through some paperwork. Well good god- all of a sudden the whole house starts to shake. I run down the hallway to find my washing machine taking off down the hall. The evil appliance was possessed. I quickly found the off button and then retreated back to the dining room to call the husband. Surprisingly the boy didn't wake up during the ruckus.

Well Matt was busy and his supervisor wrote a funny note for him about me being attacked by the washing machine and now needed reassurance. So I turn to facebook for answers! Yep. I love facebook. I post up that my washing machine tried to run away and within minutes I had a real reply amidst the smart ass comments (oh yes, you all know who you are!). Kennie had a run-in with an evil washing machine herself and knew exactly how to extract the evilness. We had forgotten to take out the packing bolts. Yep, it was all our fault.

Matt fixed it when he came home and all is good. On our next trip to town we need to buy some dryer hose thingy so we can stack them. Isn't it odd when you hit that point in your life where you get excited about an appliance? When did I get old?

Hunter checking out the new washing machine:

Hunter dancing for the new washing machine:

Now the next problem. The dryer squeaks and there is no "how to deal with mice living in your dryer" section of the manual. Any ideas Kennie?

And the word of the day goes to Clare (of course one of the smart-ass commenters): Laundrygeist

Thanks Indigo!

I'm a model and you know what I mean.. as I do my little turn on the catwalk... on the catwalk..

I'm too sexy for my kamiks, to sexy for my kamiks...

Thanks for the awesome seal kamiks Indigo! The boy loves them!

I made MITTENS!! Want some?

Thanks to my friend Aida over in Arviat, I was able to make my first pair of mittens yesterday! For my first pair they turned out pretty darn good, or at least I think so. Aida was awesome, she scanned in 6 pages of a book and then emailed it to me. The instructions were pretty easy to follow.

So here is what I made, and they are for sale!
Moose hide (not smoked), and beaver mittens:

Because these are my first pair someone with the right size hands will get a great deal on them. They are fleece lined and will fit someone with small hands- about 6" long. They are just right on me, but I already own a pair!

I have my first order already! Tina has asked for a pair but she would like them to flare out and go longer so they will go over the sleeves of her parka. I was dreaming about them all night and can't wait to start on them today!!

So if anyone is interested in the pair that I just made or would like a custom pair made just for you, let me know! I will get back to you with prices and what measurements I need. They can also be made with grey or white rabbit, and pink/forest green/navy blue hide.

Missed a week, but found a name!

In all of the excitement of the holidays I became confused as to how many weeks pregnant I am!

I thought I was 24 weeks along this week, but nope. I am now 25 weeks! Only 15 more weeks to go until we meet little Skeletor.

And finally success on the naming front! We had the girl name picked out since we were expecting with Hunter, but we have been stuck on a boys name for this one.

So for a girl: Anna Elizabeth
And for a boy: Cavan Edward

Cavan is an Irish/Gaelic name that means handsome one and we both like the name. Hurray! So we are all ready for the baby to arrive. Well sort of! Still need to find a few more baby items. We left most of that stuff up north after we had Hunter. I have been watching the classifieds in the newspaper and I think I can pick up most everything I need from there.

So almost done the second trimester!
