Keeping Busy!

I have definitely become a sewing addict! My housework and children have been a little neglected over the last couple of weeks while I have been doing custom orders and trying new projects.
Attempt #2 of cute fleece hoody.
I have since pulled the hood off and made it come together in the front.

And I am finally happy with attempt #3! It is about a size 3T and now I will be trying to make some smaller ones.

SANTA!

Santa came to Faro on the weekend and had presents for every good girl and boy! Hunter has been so excited for Santa this year. Every day he asks about him, talks about his sleigh and reindeer, and ohhs and ahhs over the decorations. Hunter's giddiness has been rubbing off on Cavan as well.

Hunter and I had been practicing for a week what he should say to Santa when it was his turn to go and sit with him. And all the practicing paid off! When his name was called he ran up on stage all by himself, crawled up beside Santa and loudly exclaimed, "I've been a good boy all year, Santa!" So darn adorable.
Not impressed with the hat I found for him:

Cavan walked up to Santa all on his own too! No screaming at all. In fact, he didn't want to leave and Mrs. Claus had to take him away.

Hunter chillin' with Santa:
Very impressed with the present Santa brought him:
Cavan was actually more interested in the candy cane from Santa than the present:

We Have Gas!

And no, not the "Oh, please excuse me. We had fresh moose for supper." kind of gas.

Faro, after three long years, finally has a gas station!
Okay, gas station might be a bit of an overstatement. We have a tank. A big tank. A tank full of gas and diesel. Sort of a gas station right?
Right now there are still some issues with the card lock, so for a couple of hours during the day one member of our town council waits there in his truck and fills up anyone who comes by with cash. But after three years of jerry cans and slip tanks, I don't hear any complaints!
So if you are thinking of touring around our beautiful territory this summer, make sure The Yukon's Best Kept Secret is on the top of your list of communities to visit. Worth the drive even more now that we have gas!

Sew Successful!

The holiday season has been good to my sewing hobby. I have participated in two craft sales, one here in Faro and the other in Ross River, and have done quite well for myself. On top of those sales I have sold a number of items from a store here in Faro, from my online Etsy site and have also had some custom orders.

I believe in the last month I have sold over a dozen pairs of mittens, two pairs of mukluks, three pill box hats and a number of kid`s items. I have made enough cash that I feel my hobby is finally at the point where it is self-sustaining- meaning I don`t have to harass my husband for my hobby money when we have other bills that need paying.

So with my earnings I have bought more supplies and am thinking of buying the new Canon Rebel that takes video through online boxing day sales.

Today after I finish my last custom order I will be trying some new projects- a cute fleece pull-over for kids and leather bags.

Thanks to everyone who has been supporting my little hobby!

Glad to be out of Whitehorse

On Friday Matt and I did a quick run into Whitehorse just for the day and I was reminded over and over again why I am happy I don't live in the city. There were the grumpy shoppers, horrible drivers, and the rush rush rush of people everywhere.

I love my quiet life far away from the hustle and bustle of town. Reading other blogs lately I see a number of people who have moved to Whitehorse from the south having troubles adjusting to small city life and I honestly just cannot understand what they are going through having never lived down south or in a large city.

Going into any store during the holiday season completely overwhelms me as well. We keep our holidays quite low key and focus more on visiting friends and family than spending all of our money on crap. Any why do most of the shoppers have to be in such a foul mood? I though one woman was going to yell at Matt in Extra Foods when our cart rolled into her way while we were loading our coolers at the check out. And then there was the woman who gave me a death glare when I said excuse me please may I get by in the craft aisle at Walmart. Of course we always smile and tell the grumps to have a great day.

Thankfully we did still find some happy people hidden amongst the foul ones. The lovely greeter at Walmart full of cheer and humour and the guy who let our truck into the line of traffic with a big grin and a wave.

I am thankful we live a quiet life far from the city and that we feel content with what we have.

StFX Alumni Event!

Seems wherever we go across the north, we are able to find people who graduated from the same University as Matt. They are easy to spot- just look for the X-ring!

Matt graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 2001 with his BSc. in Nursing. Wow. I just realized it was almost 10 years ago he graduated.

Last month we got a phone call from another graduate of StFX who wanted to put together an alumni gathering in Whitehorse. Matt was so excited about it all and it actually worked out that we can attend! It took a lot of begging and promising favours though. Matt was the only nurse in town for tomorrow, so a casual has been brought in to replace him. The kids aren't coming with us and will be taken care of by three different people people! Thank you to our wonderful neighbours, Dave and Diana, across the street who are taking them early tomorrow morning, to Heather who will have them all day and then to Erica who will take them home, feed them and put them to bed.

I wish we could spend the night in Whitehorse, but instead we will be driving right back home again because I want to attend a craft fair in Ross River that is starting at 10am on Saturday. So we will be doing a 800km round trip to do some shopping and partying! Completely worth it.

Tomorrow is also Matt's birthday! It will have also been 10 years to the date that he received his X-ring. Looks like tomorrow is going to be one heck of a fantastic day!
